“Everything’s bigger in Texas, except for the waves.” Or so says Frank Floyd, owner and operator of Wind and Wave surf shop in Corpus Christi, Texas.
That level of realism about one’s home break is hard to find in surfing. But don’t let the humility fool you. Every dog has its day, they say. And Texas not only gets surf, but it also gets pretty decent surf on occasion.
What coastal Texas lacks in swell, it somewhat counterintuitively makes up for in talented surfers. According to Floyd, poor surf forces surfers to make the most of what’s on offer.
The above is a vignette of the budding surf culture that exists in Texas – a place that many in the U.S. probably had no idea even gets surf. What Texas lacks in surf it makes up for in pure, unadulterated stoke.
