Getting in fistfights on the beach is a proud surfing tradition. Whether its scrapping over two-foot waves, slapping a drop-in, or just being an asshole for no reason, nobody loves a sandy dustup more than a core lord. Which means a recent viral video of a Hawaiian congressional candidate getting knocked out on a Maui beach should be right up said core lord’s alley.
The subject of the video is Kirill Basin, a 40-year-old Democratic candidate for Hawaii’s second congressional district. As Hawaii News Now reports, the altercation began in front of the Mana Kai Maui hotel at Keawakapu Beach, when Maui police say a 61-year-old man asked Basin to turn down his music. The exchange quickly escalated, with Basin loudly threatening multiple beach-goers.
Things took another turn when a man later identified as Kama Homan became involved. “I’m like, maybe I should intervene, and then as I got closer and closer, he was just getting more irate and violent and then saying stuff. ‘I’m going to hurt you’ or ‘I can injure you’ or ‘You like scrap’ to the aunties,” Kama told Hawaii News Now. “He put his hands on me and as soon as he tried to shove me, I hit him with a left and a right and that’s when he stumbled and fell over the chairs.”
Basin then picked up a beach chair and attempted to hit Kama with it, but was promptly knocked out. Kama credited his ability to swiftly dispatch Basin to mixed martial arts training.
However, what happened next has been a source of contention. According to the Maui Police Department, Basin allegedly pulled out a knife and threatened multiple people before tossing it into the ocean. “He ended up pulling the knife out on me after the altercation and that was obviously a game changer when I knew he was off,” added Kama. However, Basin’s attorney, Brandon Segal, disputed this claim, saying, “There’s no evidence in any of these videos that have been circulated tremendously that he ever had a knife in his possession. He never had a firearm in his possession.”
On Tuesday Basin made an initial court appearance, where a judge set bail at $1 million, according to Fox News. If released, Basin was ordered to stay away from Keawakapu Beach and have no contact with Homan and four others.
