Cribbar is sorta like the U.K.’s version of Mavericks. The water is cold. The paddle out is long. The rocks are sharp. And the consequences are real. Nestled in the peninsula town of England’s Newquay, Cribbar is one of the region’s best and most notorious big wave destinations.
And over the weekend, the often fickle and unpredictable surf spot turned on. (Everywhere’s been getting a healthy dose of waves lately). Local legend Tom Butler helmed the mission out at Cribs, which included groms like 17-year-old Angus Scotney and 15-year-old Kamron Matthews. Prominent media outlets caught wind of the latter youngin taking to the water, claiming he’s the “youngest ever” to surf the wave.
The wave rarely breaks but the boys seemed to score it about as good as it gets. And towards the end of the clip, the dangers of Cribs become apparent as one of the surfers breaks his leash, narrowly missing an encounter with the rocks. Needless to say, he got lucky. Way luckier than this bloke who bounced off the rocks during a tow session a while back:
