In some ways, Cyclone Alfred ended up not quite living up to the hype. What initially threatened to be the first cyclone to make landfall in Brisbane since 1974 diminished to a tropical low-weather system shortly before hitting the coast. Though it still had a significant effect on the region, it wasn’t the level of cataclysmic destruction some early predictions warned of – and that’s a good thing.
On the other hand, for surfers, it was everything they hoped for and then some. Famed breaks Kirra and Coolangatta lit up in ways that were legitimately historic. All the world could do was sit and watch in awe as clip after clip rolled in of Australian surfers catching the rides of their lives.
Though that time is now relegated to memory and the annals of surfing history, that doesn’t mean we can’t relive it every once in a while. To do that, YouTube channel Surf Days just posted an edit of Kirra point going off during a mid-morning session on March 3. Enjoy.
