Way back in the mists of time, a fickle spot off a river mouth in the Spanish Basque Country was the site of the 2006 Billabong Pro Mundaka. When it’s on, Mundaka is one of the world’s best waves, but massive tidal swings don’t make it the ideal spot for a contest. In 2006, the event shifted from Mundaka to a spot called Bakio when those tides ruined the wave, but before the move happened, there was some truly epic surfing. Bobby Martinez eventually won the event. As a rookie, that was impressive, but considering the fact that he won against Kelly Slater, it becomes absolutely incredible.
The WSL is stitching together a whole lot of throwback videos lately. They’ve got deep vaults, after all, and with the tour on hold, now’s the time to give the hungry viewer a meal. Featuring surfing from Kelly Slater, Andy Irons, Bobby Martinez, Taj Burrow, Joel Parkinson, Mick Fanning, Luke Stedman, Bruce Irons, Travis Logie, and many more, the 15-minute wrap up you see above is a good look at times gone by.
