The Inertia

Wave pools are so en vogue these days. And it seems like they’re cropping up everywhere. Their recent proliferation has ignited serious debate across the internet about whether the soul of surfing has been lost. It’s worth noting, though, that different wave generating technologies have been around for the better part of a century.

In the run-up to its launch, URBNSURF – a project in Melbourne that leverages Wavegarden’s Cove tech – created the little video above that gives a cursory overview of the development of artificial waves. While the technology’s become more advanced over the years, the fact remains modern society has had a bit of a thing for creating faux waves.  But that certainly hasn’t made the fruit from the ocean any less sweet.
