The family that _______ together, stays together. That blank can be filled with a million different words, but surfing is one of the best to fill it with. There’s something similar about the relationship with family and the relationship with surfing, isn’t there? It can be the best thing in the world or the worst. It can be difficult and frustrating or rewarding and fun. But no matter how hard things get, there’s always that underlying love.
The Coffey family is a good example of that. Ward built his Santa Cruz-based shaping business from the ground up, and his boys, Ben and Sam, were born with foam dust in their hair. Ward Coffey Surfboards stuck to the old-school ways of shaping: custom shapes and face-to-face meetings with clients who double as friends.
Now, Ben and Sam are all grown up and surfing very well. They, of course, surf on boards their father made for them. Here’s a look into their daily life and how it all came to be.
