The Inertia

The Wedge doesn’t often catch your eye when it “looks fun.” Most of the Newport mutant’s time in the spotlight is attributed to days where it looks more like, well, a mutant wave. When a south swell finds its way into this little nook along the Orange County coastline we are used to seeing freakishly unpredictable, large, and punishing surf that breaks boards, drops jaws and makes you cringe. But here we have proof that when the swell energy starts to subside into something a little more manageable all of the sudden The Wedge starts to resemble a less supernatural wave. Toward the end of Hurricane Linda’s run along the West Coast the surf stuck around with a few last barrels to hand out. Yes it’s still a challenging wave to surf even on the smaller days. But it also looks, dare we say, fun?
