There are a handful of waves in the world that shouldn’t be surfed by the vast majority of the surfing population. Shipstern Bluff is one of them. It’s a warping, step-laden beast of a wave that would, could, and (hopefully not) should kill a person. The people who surf there, though, love it. Those who can really claim local status at Shippies are a small bunch, and from the outside, it looks like they might have a screw loose. It’s not that their screw is looser, though, it’s just that it’s screwed in a different place.
Inside the Bluff is a film that looks at the intricacies of one of the world’s scariest waves. Directed by filmmaker Cameron Staunton and starring Kipp Caddy, it’s a good look at the realities of what it takes to surf the place—and none of it is easy.
