The Inertia

You can hardly learn anything about Senegal as a surf destination without first digging into its unofficial debut as one in The Endless Summer. And back in 1964 when Bruce Brown was telling his story, discovering a place like this was still a driving force in surfing’s lifeblood. Of course, we’re not saying Mike Hynson, Robert August, and Brown discovered Senegal, just in the sense of tapping into its potential for waves and showing the rest of us what was possible here.

It’s pretty amazing that Senegal is still tied to that film for many of these same reasons more than 50 years later. The place is a modern reminder that even with Google Earth and surf cams aplenty, we can at least dream of places that feel like they’re waiting to be discovered.

Sam Piter’s getting a front row seat to that life. We first learned of Sam a couple years ago and he’s been collecting stamps in his passport ever since. Every few months it seems his dad, retired CT vet, Didier Piter is checking in from their latest trip; Indonesia, Costa Rica, somewhere in the South Pacific…and this time, a surf history lesson in wave rich Senegal.
