World class Honolua Bay did her thing early in January, and the Maui Boys were on it. It was the best day of the winter so far: classic 6-8 ft Honolua perfection… finally a swell direction that slid past Molokai and wrapped into the Bay. Honolua gets blocked by Molokai a lot, but when she’s on, it’s a sight to see. Don’t expect to just paddle out and get a set wave, though, because the boys will have it on lockdown. They wait all year for days like this, and the line up is highly regulated, so it’s best to just sit on the cliffs and watch the show. Highlights of the day were Kevin Sullivan’s barrel of the day in the afternoon, underground charger Charlie Solario packing a big barrel, and 10-year-old Ty Simpson Kane out there charging with the help of all his uncles, who were giving him pointers and watching his back.
