“Swell of the Decade” is a phrase that gets tossed around at ease in our world now. If a purple or red blob gets purple or red enough on the swell models, forecasts are shared with nervous anticipation, like F-bombs on the floor of a busy Wall Street office.
Inevitably, we all hype upcoming swells out of nothing more than hope. We want to see photos and videos of people on the waves of their lives. And no matter where you are in the world right now, you likely searched Google Flights at least once in the past few days when you heard murmurs that the Indian Ocean is gearing up for its newest episode of, “Swell of the Decade.”
Josh Kerr summed up the reality of it all best, though: “It looks like a millennial swell,” he said laughing and probably knowing the phrase has lost all meaning from overuse. “It could be crazy. We’ll have to wait and see.”
Exactly. We have to wait and see. Luckily, we don’t have to wait much longer. These guys are about to wrap up the Rip Curl Cup Padang Padang on what’s expected to be the most epic day of…well, apparently the most epic day of the decade.
