The Inertia

By now, Taylor Steele is a surf filmmaker of mythic proportions. Just uttering the word ‘Momentum’ will cause most surfers these days to shiver whilst segments of the film run through their heads – like an acid flashback of sorts. Over the years, though, the team around Taylor has grown into a gaggle of skilled videographers, experts in particular angles and shots that all coalesce into the magic of a unitary Taylor flick. Todd Heater is one such person. His focus on the small ubiquitous moments in time that most might glaze over is his specialty. A crab slowly crawling across the sand in the early morning light, for instance.

Taylor and his team’s attention to detail is part of the reason he’s able to attract big stars for his films these days, and his forthcoming feature Proximity is no different. For one segment, Taylor invited Dave Rastovich and Steph Gilmore, two legends in their own right, on a little jaunt through Mexico to score a secluded right point break.

This is episode three of a series called ‘Chronicles: The Making of Proximity’ by Teton Gravity Research. Check out more episodes on Youtube.
