The Inertia

Finishing what “those dang devil winds got the best of” on Wednesday, Round 2 saw a handful of all-Aussie and all-Brazilian affairs. Despite a slow start, Supertubes got rolling, making for a couple of no-holds-barred heats and Freddy Pattachia’s heat of the day.

Frenchman Jeremy Flores and three-thumbed Big Islander Sebastian Zietz took advantage of a couple energetic sets for a neck-to-neck battle that eventually put Zietz through to Round 3, but it was a runner that saw Seabass’s fellow Hawaiian walk away with the second highest heat total, second only to Jordy Smith. The goofyfooter squared off against Travis Logie, and was able to pull away from the South African with three supremely aggressive hacks before finding his way into a nice, long tube that gave him the highest waves score of the day: 9.93.

“I knew that wave was going to be a gem,” Patacchia said. “I was thinking: ‘Don’t screw this up, Freddy.’ It felt great, it was a perfect J-Bay wave.”

Also on point? Miguel Pupo, whose barrel game put on quite the show.

“It’s my first time in J-Bay and I’ve already fallen in love with the place,” said Pupo. “It’s a special place for all the surfers because of the history over here. Hopefully I can come here every year. Monday’s conditions look pretty good, so hopefully we get barreled and put on a good show for the South Africans.”
