The Inertia

The Bu is an interesting place. It’s a hotbed for hipness, and it’s been that way for a long, long time. Back before Gidget ruled the silver screen, Malibu was a place for society’s outcasts—Miki Dora et al spent their days there on the sand, riding perfect waves and generally doing things every said they shouldn’t. Then Gidget showed up and kickstarted an entire movement. Malibu was swarmed. Go back to the valley was shouted. And now, all these years later, we have a vast population of surfers all competing for the same waves. It seems, on good days (and bad, come to think of it) that every single one of that vast population is bobbing around at Malibu, hoping for a set wave. It’s a melting pot of progression and old school. Homeless people living out of their vans park beside convertible Benzes. Everyone surfs together—and everyone burns each other. It’s part and parcel of surfing there. Love it or hate it, the Bu is one of California’s best waves and damn it, it’s a part of surfing history. Here, the inimitable Jack Coleman points his camera at a few people who are right at home at Los Angeles’ most weird and wonderful wave.
