The Inertia

When the North Shore goes flat, North Shore standouts like Jamie O’Brien need a place to go. Luckily, they don’t have to go far when there’s a bit of summer swell coming from the right direction. When Ala Moana Bowls goes off it really goes off, and it’s had a bit of a dream run in recent weeks.

“We are about to get really barrelled,” Jamie says in his latest video. “Summertime, Waikiki. Well, kind of Waikiki. It’s at the edges. But it’s crazy, all the boats and stuff. Those things are just going to get rocked if they decide to head out. It’s going to get gnarly.”

Bowls is known as a place that’ll test the limits of any helmsman when the swell is up. “Boats that attempt to go out there are absolutely crazy,” Jamie continued. “They’re not in their right minds.”

As luck would have it (not sure whose luck, exactly), at least one boat did decide to head out. But not before Jamie got a few good ones under his belt and broke two leashes in the process.
