There are two kinds of surf trip. The first, let’s call it the froth trip, is almost exclusively about getting incredible waves. You spend your days surfing for hours with blinders on to most other things around you. The second is less about the waves and more about the experience–to say you did it. One’s not necessarily better than the other, but they sort of balance each other out. If you spend all your time chasing waves, you may miss out on the natural beauty of other places with less than stellar surf. On the other hand, sometimes you just gotta get tubed off your nutter.
Oregon may not be Indo, but it can get pretty good from time to time. And while Jamie O’Brien and crew didn’t score incredible waves on their trip, from the looks of it they didn’t care much. Sometimes seeing the beauty of the Pacific Northwest via RV, surfing, river surfing, and snowboarding all on the same trip to say you did is enough.
