Much of the world’s infatuation with Jamie O’Brien is owed to his ability to make life-threatening activities look like strolls on a playground. He does board transfers at 15-foot Wedge. He sends it over the falls on an inflatable couch when Pipe is double overhead. He recently decided to give big wave rafting a go. And for this reason, he’s also one of the best people to give an underwater tour of the world’s deadliest wave: Pipe.
Everybody’s seen photos and videos of the place maxing out. And we’ve all heard of the caves that live and breathe just a matter of feet below it all. This tour, however, has a realistic J.O.B. twist, as he searches the reef on a flat day for some of its buried…stuff (because we can’t exactly call them treasures). Golf balls, hacky sacks, drones, an iPhone case, some pocket change…apparently everything’s fair game at Pipe. In an ironic twist, he even comes across the glass off a Slater Designs Firewire.
“Slater, dude. Look what we found!”
