The Inertia

With the last big winter swells of the season rolling in, time is precious. Most surfers on the North Shore are looking to find ways to eke out a few more waves, before the fallow days of summer take hold. Not Jamie O’Brien, though. Instead he found four buddies and took them out on a big-ass SUP.

It’s the second time in recent memory the North Shore fixture and surf influencer pulled this stunt. Both excursions happened at Sunset beach, during some surprisingly heavy conditions for a novelty stunt. As was noted in our analysis of the last JOB-led SUPSquatch fiasco, the whole thing is a throwback to a now-bygone style of surf vlog that prioritized fun over bland aspirational content.

I have to say I’m inclined to agree. And though it’s probably as pointless to complain about changing internet trends as it is to belabor the passage of time itself, it sure is a nice changeup that, rather than hearing yet again about some semi-pro’s spiritual connection to the ocean and how much meditating has changed his life, we instead get to see a bunch of idiots get rocked on a pool toy.

Much like the last swells of winter, all we can do is make sure to enjoy the moment while it lasts.
