Lance’s Right has come a long way in the past three decades. The spot, located at the south end of Sipora Island in the Mentawai Islands, went totally un-surfed until 1991, but that all changed when Australian surfer Lance Knight first rode the wave that now bears his name (though it also goes by ‘Hollow Trees’ or HTs). Since then, the spot has exploded, and it is now a regular stop on the globe-trotting tours of freesurfers and YouTubers, including, most recently, Jamie O’Brien.
At the start of his latest vlog, O’Brien didn’t mince words at what he hoped to get out of the strike mission. “The goal is to get a big double-up, pull in, stand up, flagpole it, get spit out and then psych up and just go do it again,” said the Pipeline aficionado. Of course, Jamie being Jamie, that’s pretty much exactly what he did.
