The Inertia

Traditional longboarding is currently benefitting from the largesse of Instagram, says the New York Times.

Apparently, the reason we see more longboarders in lineups lately is because people scroll past pretty pictures on their phones and want to emulate them. Arguably, longboarding may also be surfing in its most approachable form.

Still, the margin between being a good longboarder and a great one is rich with micro-movements, timing, and adjustments that aren’t entirely obvious. That, and the best of the best have a style so unique to them that just their silhouette on a wave is a dead give away of their identity.

Jared Mell is a modern surfer who falls into that category – one of the most talented loggers around who somehow constantly looks like he’s slightly off-balance and in complete control at the same time.

Here, Mell tames the picturesque point breaks of East Australia with aplomb, making longboarding look particularly attractive.
