Way back in November of 2018, a very large swell ran into Maui’s most famous big wave spot. Jaws lit up. The wind howled offshore. All the best big wave surfers in the world showed up, and the cliffs were packed with spectators. The Jaws Challenge blew the starting horn and a show for the ages commenced. Of course, any good show is not as good without a bit of carnage—and big wave events are not an exception to that rule. Trevor Carlson whipped it around for a fast-moving monster, then found out first hand what it’s like to be on the flinging end of a catapult.
