For all its inviting, barreling beach breaks, Hossegor dishes out a buffet of thick-lipped, pile-driving spills when things get heavy. One certainly has to be willing to roll the dice that a door will slam shut more often than provide a glorious exit.
Or maybe that’s just a really nice way to say you have to be of the professional, world-class caliber to really do Basque Country justice on its best day. And that’s just what we have here: a crew of top-notch talent taking to the water in a late-winter session (it’s really spring already??) for the ages. Jeremy Flores, Joan Duru, Aritz Aranburu, Sam Piter, Marc Lacomare are just a few of the faces who got spat out of tubes a surfing everyman would replay in his or her mind for decades.
“The surf conditions were incredible this winter,” filmmaker David Berthet told The Inertia. “We were lucky because of this pandemic. All of our best local surfers were here to put on a high-level show.”
How high level? Well, The lineup isn’t particularly packed throughout the highlight video Berthet suggests could be the best winter session he’s ever seen. At one point, a drone shot shows less than 10 people in the water with a mind-blowing left tearing its way through.
