The Inertia

How many times have you and friends debated what you’d willingly sacrifice for a chance to enter the doors of the Surf Ranch? Or more specifically, what would you give up to actually have that pool to yourself? A day? An hour? A single wave?

If money wasn’t a concern most surfers would fork over an obscene amount simply because the Ranch isn’t technically open to the public in the same way Wavegarden’s surf parks or Waco’s BSR are. There’s still an exclusivity to a session at the Ranch.

Joe Rogan doesn’t surf but the guy’s definitely not hurting for money. Even so, he’s not interested after being told surfing the Ranch can carry a five-figure price tag. Actually, his reaction is slightly stronger than just a general lack of interest.

“You can suck all the d***s,” Rogan said after being told an ESPN article priced a session in the pool at 10 grand.”Listen, I got some cash but I ain’t spending ten-thousand dollars to surf for an hour.”

ESPN’s number only paints part of the picture though. Moments later, Rogan is told you can score a session for $100, which is most likely actually referencing approximate session rates at public parks like BSR. The WSL did, however, roll out a pilot training program at the Surf Ranch this summer with small group sessions, video footage breakdown of your waves, and focused coaching — essentially a professional surfer’s boot camp for a day — for a bit over $3k.

Worth it?
