John John Florence may be most famous for his surfing – the kind that captivates hundreds of thousands of pairs of eyeballs with every film release and contest win – but second to that, he’s heralded for his humility. Unlike other pro surfers that bask in their celebrity, John John notoriously eschews it, runs from it. And curiously, he’s loved even more.
To be fair, other, lesser-paid surfers can’t afford the luxury of a reclusive personality. They have bills to pay. But, Florence, as we know, is puzzled by people that post frequently on Instagram, and seemingly only mildly tolerates a camera in his face.
Despite that reluctance, the surf vlog scene on YouTube just got a little more crowded with a behind-the-scenes look at the WSL Awards and subsequent Quiksilver Pro Gold Coast – Florence’s first event since injuring his knee last year in Bali (which he’s reportedly re-injured) – all from Florence’s vantage.
Since it’s John John, we’ll ignore the fact that the events in this vlog are nearly three months old, and four contests (and a re-injury) have transpired since. If the early comments are anything to go by, fans are anxious for more.
In addition to the episode above, Florence dropped a second episode in the same day on his YouTube channel chronicling the J-Bay event from last year. It’s hard to say which has better surfing. Enjoy!
