There’s always something special about surfing at your home break. Sure, exotic and far-flung destinations around the world will usually have much better actual waves, but that’s not everything. There’s no substitute for the familiarity, the comfort, and the community of surfing in your own backyard.
Jordy Smith is someone who knows that better than most, in more ways than one. Not only has he had the chance to travel to many more waves than almost any of us will (the result of a ridiculously long pro-surfing career, that miraculously doesn’t seem to be slowing down), but as a Durban local, he also grew up with some of the best home breaks in the world.
So it’s particularly satisfying to see him surfing in The Bay of Plenty. Even though the beachbreak may not provide the picture-perfect peeling waves of places like J-Bay, it’s home. And that’s what counts.
“It’s that time of year again,” writes Smith in the caption of his latest YouTube offering. “Heard the Durban bowls have started to light up. I grew up surfing these waves and really miss surfing them day to day. Here is my last session I surfed bay of plenty.”
