The Inertia

Julian Wilson’s the In Between series has been a departure from your typical professional surfer’s vlog so far. For one, unlike most Youtube sensations riding the wave, Wilson is a full-fledged tour competitor. So while a handful of talented pros are followed by cameras while they fill their days hunting for waves, jumping on last-minute flights, or coaxing us with the ocassional prank or gimmick, Wilson’s video series is a rare look behind the curtain of the sport’s highest competitive field.

And as you’d guess from its name, the series focuses mostly on the time in between heats, which has mostly translated to Wilson sharing glimpses of fatherhood and downtime filled with stressing about contest results. If your daily internet diet needs to include straight up surf porn then Wilson’s vlog probably hasn’t been for you.

But let this episode from his time at the Corona Open J Bay be the outlier. Traveling with no wife or daughter, the current CT 10th ranked (number nine entering J Bay) surfer had nothing but time to focus on his surfing before competition got started. As far as pre-comp free surfs go, Wilson appears primed for a solid tear through the field. Instead, he matched his poorest result of the year when Zeke Lau ousted him in the Round of 32.

Nonetheless, like we said, if you’re looking to get your mind surf on and live vicariously through a man toying with one of the best waves on the planet, you’re in the right place.
