The Inertia

While the WSL Championship Tour has certainly earned its “Dream Tour” moniker, for the athletes the constant travel and, in some cases, the consistent frustration of competitive defeat (there’s only one winner, after all) can make it all a bit of a slog.

Some of the most seasoned vets have learned by now that the only way to have longevity on tour is to avoid letting losses and wins define them – and part of doing that requires identifying things that truly matter in life. Fresh off an unsuccessful world title race, Julian Wilson is currently staring down the barrel of two equal 17ths and a 9th after three events. It likely isn’t the start to the year he’d hoped for.

Still, it says something about the man when the first eight-minute episode of his new web series heavily features touching family moments lightly peppered with free surf clips and a single heat from the 2019 Rip Curl Pro Bells Beach. At Bells, Wilson ultimately lost to Kelly Slater and doesn’t seem too happy about it. But, after moments to process, he gives a candid post-heat interview and returns to all-star dad duties no worse for the wear.
