Remember when tandem surfing was a thing? Surely it still is somewhere, but it’s not at the level it was when black and white triangular-shaped men in singlets hoisted women the size of Q-Tips above their heads on very large, heavy surfboards. Well, guess where it resurfaced? With Kai Lenny, of course, and since Kai Lenny is always looking for a way to make things a little different, he did it on a sailboard. No singlets this time, and no hoisting, but just a pair of supremely talented windsurfers on a tandem windsurfing board. Yeah, tandem windsurfing has been around for a while, but it’s definitely not the most common mode of transportation on the ocean.
Lenny, along with world champion Ricardo Campello took the double-sailed contraption out to Ho’okipa on Maui and proceeded to do a few very fun-looking things. It’s “the beginning of riding huge waves and sending massive jumps,” according to Lenny. And if he’s proven anything, he’s proven that when he says it’s the beginning of something, it probably is.
