The Inertia

“I got scorpioned harder than I’ve ever been scorpioned in my life. It was a pretty horrible feeling,” Otton explained to Todd Kline in a post-heat interview. It’s something you never want to hear come from your own lips. Because if you do, your back is probably broken or you’re not walking right for several months. During his Quarter Final heat matchup against Jeremy Flores, Kai Otton pulled into a massive closeout, slamming head first into the reef before receiving the worst scorpion of his life.

For those who don’t know what a scorpion is, it’s when your back bends the wrong way and your feet come over your head, simulating the movement of a scorpion. You don’t have to be a doctor in sports medicine to know this is very, very dangerous. Despite taking an early exit  from the contest, Kai seems to be in decent health and believes he will be in shape to compete in J-Bay.
