The Inertia

The entire surf world congregates on the North Shore of Oahu every winter for many reasons. Of course, the plethora of waves and nonstop swells brewing over the Pacific that pound this seven mile stretch of beaches and reefs are a good foundation for it all. And from an industry sense if you have all the best surfers on the planet on one island for a couple months, you might as well throw some jerseys on them and throw some of the biggest contests in the sport.

As for up and coming young pros, a season on the North Shore is the equivalent of a first-timer’s vacation in Vegas. Boom or bust. You can hit the jackpot with the best waves of your life. And if you’re on a real hot streak, some of those waves could come at just the right time during the Vans Triple Crown of surfing. Put a great campaign together at Haleiwa Ali’i Beach Park, Sunset Beach, and eventually the Banzai Pipeline, and you could be cashing out for the rest of your career. That’s what Kekoa Cazimero reminded us of this winter during the Vans Triple Crown. A true WQS warrior, Cazimero turned more than a few heads when he fought his way to the Final of the Billabong Pipe Masters Trials.

He’s on the map now, and it’s hard to imagine Cazimero is headed anywhere but up in the rankings after 2015. If you don’t believe it yet, these behind the scenes highlights of his run through the Vans Triple Crown will give you a second thought.
