Kelia Moniz says learning how to move with and in the ocean is like learning a second language. And that’s not a bad way to contextualize our fascination with something like surfing. Man isn’t made to live in the ocean, but with enough familiarity he can learn to live with it, through it, and around it passionately. Only for this surfer it’d be more likely that surfing was her first language rather than a second.
Moniz was born into that heritage. In this behind the scenes clip from The Search For Freedom Kelia she insight on how growing up in a home full of surfers meant spending more time in the water than on land. So that “familiarity” with being in the ocean is near genetic for the 2x world champion longboarder.
