If you follow competitive surfing at all, then you know World Surf League CEO Erik Logan recently made news when he abruptly left the company in Brazil. Since then, speculation has run wild. Everyone from Bob Hurley to Pat O’Connell and other industry staples have been suggested as a replacement. One of the more popular nominees has been Kelly Slater, 11-time world champ, and someone who certainly understands the business.
But in a recent video interview with ZIGZAG magazine out of South Africa during the J-Bay Open, Kelly put those rumors definitively to bed.
“I have no interest in (the CEO position),” Kelly says at the 8:18 mark in the video above. “People keep saying that. I’ll write my ideas down and they can have them. But I don’t want a job.” Guess that means the WSL needs to look elsewhere to fill its top spot? Mr. Slater also covers some other interesting territory during the interview including the fantastic organization, Surfers Not Street Children, the time he slapped Sunny Garcia, and how ZIGZAG once made fun of his teeth. The man can remember everything.
