The action that went down yesterday at the Tahiti Pro easily made for some of the best competitive surfing in recent memory. And the same goes for the wipeouts.
In his Round of 32 heat against Jack Freestone, Kelly Slater turned on a heaving one only to hit the eject button and pin-drop about 10 feet. But, he wasn’t the only one. Thankfully nobody was seriously hurt, but that’s probably due in part to the strategies pro surfers have developed to minimize impacts on the razor-sharp reef below.
Last October, Kelly Slater went on Joe Rogan’s podcast in an hours-long, Rogan-esque stream of consciousness exchange. But, part of their discussion centered on how to slip out of a Teahupo’o cavern unscathed, or, at least, not dead. Given what went down yesterday, we thought we’d dig this up for you to revisit.
