The Inertia

It’s been about a month since all eyes collectively turned to Oahu’s Seven Mile Miracle and much of the surf world descended on the place. Around the beginning of the Pipe Masters in early December, though, is when things really ramp up. It’s a chaotic scene for pro surfers jumping from one obligation to the next and trying to squeeze in opportunities to get in the water for fun or to compete.

Nothing illustrates that better than Koa Rothman’s recent episode of his series This Is Livin’. In the span of a few days, Koa goes from getting a few waves at Pipe before the trials begin to a signing in Waikiki to surfing again to an autograph signing at his old elementary school to the Wave Warriors shoot. Not to say Koa seems to mind – it’s part of the job. And for everyone else stuck in that nine-to-five grind, the prospect of life as a pro surfer being anything but dreamy is probably eye-roll inducing.

Still, to be a fly on the wall as Koa bounces through a week at the annual North Shore circus (while bagging a handful of bombs at Pipe in the process, we might add) is illuminating.
