Kolby Aipa was honored with a paddle-out in Huntington Beach this past Saturday.
The 20-year-old was the grandson of influential shaper Ben Aipa and son of Duke Aipa. He tragically passed away on August 5, as a result of an e-bike accident in which he was reportedly being towed by a car while riding the bike and was hit by the same car that was towing him.
Kolby was a beloved member of the Huntington Beach surf community, as evidenced by the throngs of visitors who came to the memorial service.
“Our son, he was a figure here, people loved him,” Duke told ABC 7. “He was one of those authentic individuals that really cared about, ‘Hey, how are you doing? How was your day? What can I do for you?’ He was like that with friends and strangers.”
To celebrate that spirit, HB surfers paddled out from Tower 2 to honor him in a ceremony, while many more looked on from the beach.
“We knew he was a good kid but never realized how deep he was, loving people and being there, amazing,” added Duke.
On Thursday, Kolby was also inducted into the Surfers Hall of Fame in Huntington Beach.
