The Inertia

A particularly nail biting moment occurred Tuesday during the action at the Vans US Open of Surfing in Huntington Beach. In her round 1 heat against Nikki Van Dijk and Laura Enever, Lakey Peterson mistimed a closeout section on a wave that swept her through the pier.

From the looks of the video above (skip ahead to 5:55), her board went one way around a pier piling and her body another. Peterson was able to act fast and untether herself from her board, but her leash remained caught in the barnacles, her board floundering in the waves. Luckily, after a brief struggle, she was able to rip the leash from the piling and set her board free. Peterson was unscathed in what could have easily been a much more serious situation and will surf against Pauline Ado in heat 5 of round 2.
