The Inertia

I know it’s not the norm for a guy to have “dating rules,” but here are mine. First, if she suggests going to sushi on date number one, there will be no date number two. I know that’s weird but A) I don’t like sushi and B) c’mon, let’s get a little creative with our date ideas and save the standard go-to’s for the third date and beyond.

My other rule is to avoid the “teach me to surf” date at all costs. This one has nothing to do with the future Mrs. Wano and everything to do with my own fragile ego in the water. It’s just flat out awkward watching a guy drag two boards down to the beach with his hopeful better half close behind, an unsure mix of nerves from him and excitement from her. Even on the most harmless of small summer days you can’t help but think, please don’t let her get smoked by a cleanup set. The ocean has its way of serving up some humility when you least expect it and the last thing I’d want is for that moment to come after four months of building up the nerve to finally ask out that cute girl from the grocery store. There she is chasing a knee high roller that jacks up out of nowhere, suddenly sent tumbling head first into the sand while I helplessly watch, praying to the gods we didn’t just end up on Kook Slams.

Now, this personal guideline doesn’t apply to the potentially awesome significant other who already surfs. To that I say let’s charge…a lot…and often. But introducing somebody to riding waves while under the early dating stages umbrella is an entirely different ball of responsibility I don’t want. So here we have Laura Enever taking one for the team. She’s giving The Bachelorette’s Becca Tilley her first surf lesson here on the North Shore, and if nothing else Becca looks like she’s having a bit of fun.”My first time surfing…. the waves were close to 30 ft… (minus 27)… and I was basically riding a large ship vessel- but you better believe I threw up my shakas like it was my JOB,” Tilley wrote.

Lesson of the day: Laura is a solid wingman/woman for anybody on the market.
