Managing to complete a marathon is an impressive feat in and of itself. However, some people still feel the need to make it harder on themselves. Australian lifeguard Andrew Reid recently did just that, by completing the whole thing dressed as a surfer.
On August 31, the 46-year-old completed the 2025 TCS Sydney Marathon in three hours, 17 minutes and 37 seconds, all while wearing sandals and holding a surfboard. In doing so, Reid set the Guinness World Record for “Fastest marathon dressed as a surfer (male).” The previous record of 4:41:57 was set by Irish runner Eamonn O’Neil at the 2018 Sydney Marathon.
“The record is home,” wrote Reid on social media.
Reid, also known as “Reidy,” is well known as a cast member of Bondi Rescue, an Australian reality television series that follows professional lifeguards who patrol Bondi Beach. He ran the marathon in support of Ocean Heroes, a charity that provides an opportunity for children on the autism spectrum to build confidence through surfing. As of this writing, he has raised $5,825.
The feat was just one of 13 records set that day. Other record-setting runs were completed wearing a school uniform, Star Wars costume, a shalwar kameez, a mechanic’s costume, light military uniform, a traditional Chinese cheongsam, and someone dressed as a glass. Runner Simone Carniglia also attained the fastest aggregate time by a type 1 diabetic to complete the seven world marathon majors.
