If you are a surfer who likes to surf in warm water tubes, there are far worse places to surf than Lombok. As is generally the case with good barrels, however, Lombok is full of shallow reef that create said good barrels. With risk comes reward, and the reward of a good barrel often comes with the risk of a flayed back.
At the spot in the video above in particular, even with a swell as solid as the one in July, the waves still break very close to shore. The end section — where the roundest of barrels are generally found — often closes out and there’s no channel to kick out into. It’s not a place for the un-skilled surfer. Luckily, Nic von Rupp, Marcinho Soares, and Usman Trioko are skilled… and they made sure the viewer knows it.
