Brazil has its fair share of heavy waves. “Shock” a wave near Niterói, immediately comes to mind. Brazil also hosts it’s own “Brazilian Nazaré,” aka Laje da Jaguaruna. Still, heavy slab waves and big waves can be mutually exclusive things, and Lucas Chianca just notched a spot in the record books for the latter. The Brazilian big wave specialist claims to have just surfed the biggest wave ever recorded in his home country, a 48-foot bomb (14.82m) at Laje de Jaguaruna.
According to Chianca, the event was a strike mission for the books. He was originally at Barra Grande, a spot more well known for kitesurfing in Bahia. When word spread that something special might come together at Laje de Jaguaruna, he sprung into action.
“I had the honor of surfing the biggest wave ever recorded in the country, 14.82m at Laje da Jaguaruna. It was quite a mission: I was in Bahia, in Barra Grande, when I got the call. That same day, I organized everything, hit the road to Rio, flew to Santa Catarina, and our epic surfing days began,” he wrote. “On the first day, we went to Rosa, which was already huge. On the second, the reward: truly impressive waves at Laje da Jaguaruna, unlike anything I’d ever seen in Brazil. A surreal energy and a day that will be remembered forever, a top-notch team and incredible waves.”
Chianca is one of the world’s best, and while 48 feet might not measure up to some of his other accomplishments in sheer size, it’s a safe bet that riding the largest wave ever seen in his home country is going to hold a special place on his mantle.
