The Inertia

Makua Rothman is basically surf royalty. He’s a big wave world champion. He’s the son of Fast Eddie. He’s an accomplished musician. His life doesn’t just revolve around surfing — surfing is part of it, like the air he breathes or the ground beneath his feet. It hasn’t been the easiest life, however. He’s had his fair share of obstacles to overcome, and here, in the World Surf League’s podcast, The Lineup, he shares a few stories about his struggles growing up on the North Shore. Some of them are not for the faint of heart.

“Being the son of Eddie Rothman wasn’t always the easiest thing, you know?” he explains. “He was indicted on multiple charges facing I don’t know how many years. Five million dollar bail, so he tells the judge, ‘why don’t you raise it a million so you can call me the six-million dollar man?'”So he’d have the highest bail ever in Hawai’i.”

He goes on to recount a story about the day the police broke down their door, and he says that lead to him making bad choices later on in life. But instead of continuing down a dark path, Makua has chosen to better himself as a person. And his story should inspire you, no matter where you’re at in life.
