The Inertia

A foiler recently had a run in with a hammerhead shark and caught it all on video. Adam Baber was capturing footage for his Instagram page, when he had the once-in-a-lifetime encounter.

When the face-off occurred, Baber was foiling while being pulled along by a remote-controlled watercraft called a tow boogie. It appears that the device attracted the interest of a shark, which pulled in ahead of Bader to inspect it. Next, Baber seemingly collides with the animal, which causes him to lose speed, let go of the tow rope and drop into the water – which is exactly not where you want to be when there’s a curious hammerhead around.

“Today a Hammerhead attacked my foil, knocked me off my board and then circled back on me eventually and thankfully changing his mind,” wrote Baber in the caption to the video. “Sorry for my screaming. I thought I was done for.”

It’s up for debate whether he was really “attacked” by the critter, bumped into the thing, or just freaked out and lost balance. However there’s no denying the sheer terror of seeing the shark making a beeline right for him, just before veering away. That’ll be a moment stuck in his mind for the rest of his life.
