There’s something alluring about riding shorter equipment in heavy surf. For one, greater maneuverability–a smaller board fits in tighter quarters, etc. The downside? Less foam makes it tougher to catch a wave in the first place. There’s nothing worse than feeling undergunned when the surf is pumping.
That’s precisely what makes Mason Ho’s exploits on three 5’2″ retro fishes by Matt “Mayhem” Biolos so impressive. Making serious drops on boards with little to no rocker, then navigating Pipe and Backdoor caverns on a board just over five-feet isn’t exactly for the faint of heart.
