Call me thick. But, it wasn’t until watching Mason Ho’s most recent edit that I finally began to understand what might be driving Mason to explore some of the shallowest, rockiest surf spots (if you can call them that) around his home on the North Shore of Oahu. It finally clicked. Beyond doing it for shock value, Mason is surfing alone in most shots in the clip above. Bottom line – if you’ve got the stones to get barreled over dry reef, you can hack the crowds that tend to congregate around spots that are less likely to result in reef rash. It also doesn’t hurt to have a board sponsor to float you new sleds every time you tear the fin boxes out of a board.
That said, Mason Ho must be part magician by the way he comes out of each of these spots unscathed.
