It’s been a big week for aerial surfing. There’s been a flurry of clips of wild stunts at Swatch Nines Surf, with the latest being a trick from Matt Meola that may not even have a name yet.
The moment came from the second edition of Swatch Nines Surf. For the second entry in the Swatch Nines 2025 series, a horde of aerialists converged on Waco, Texas. Though the proceedings are centered around Waco Surf’s famed air-friendly pool, the event is not limited to just surfing. Organizers have managed to create a unique and eclectic mix of surfing, skateboarding, and BMX – with out-of-the-box attractions such as a skate ramp suspended over the water by a crane.
Last week we saw Hughie Vaughan land an air that was quickly praised as the “best ever in a wave pool,” and earned a nod from Tony Hawk himself. Not to be outdone, Matt Meola just sent his own entry into the surfing history books – an air so wild that it seems to defy definition.
“Matt Meola has landed a, well we’re not positive on what to call it,” wrote the Instagram page Get Sendy in the caption of a video for the stunt. “Matt said it’s a rodeo/wodeo 540 revert to a 7. Tony Hawk said an alley-oop stale 5. Anyway, HE LANDED IT and did it at Swatch Nines. We want to call it a Meola flip, but we’re just the messenger!”
