The Inertia

In the early 2000s, big wave surfing’s vanguard was literally pushing the sport to new heights. Until then, the limits of what waves could be caught under human power were thought to have been reached. So small, heavy tow boards and personal watercraft became the tools necessary for progression.

After a little wave called Ghost Tree faded into obscurity, though, Maverick’s became California’s undisputed premier big wave spot. Paddle performances progressed over the years as a result, and then in 2010 everything changed.

A historic swell hit Mav’s for the 2010 Maverick’s Invitational and the day saw a monumental leap forward in paddle-in progression. Big wave surfing is still searching for the limit of how big is too big to paddle into.
