The Inertia

Josie Prendergast might not be a name you’re familiar with. But if you like watching stylish, effortless surfing, then you should remember it, because she’s just getting started.

Prendergast, who spent her first five years on a tiny island in the Philippines and her formative years in Byron Bay, showed a knack for longboarding very early on. Soon after her family moved to Australia, her father began teaching Josie and her brothers how to surf. Josie took to it like a duck to water, and never looked back.

Now, in her last year of high school, the 17-year-old is catching the attention of everyone that watches her surf, including legendary shaper Bob McTavish.

“It was pretty natural for me,” McTavish told GrindTV. “I had made surfboards for their dad way back in the 1960s and it’s great to see the newest generation coming through.”

And while Josie is focussed on having fun, traveling, and surfing as much as she can right now, she’s got big aspirations for the future–not competitive ones, though.

“I would also love to have my own orphanage home or be able to have enough money so I can supply kids in third world countries with everyday basic school supplies. That would be a dream,” she says.
