The Inertia

Behind every good surf video part is a good team of filmmakers. Sure, the surfer and the surfing is the meat on the bird, but the director, the camera people, the editors, and everyone else involved are the bones that hold everything together. And when it comes to creating a team with strong bones, Taylor Steele has a secret weapon: Alejandro Berger.

“Alejandro, to me, is my SEAL team,” says Steele. “I bring him into projects where I know it’s going to be a difficult shoot, logistically. Traveling a lot, foreign languages, multiple locations, on the fly… you need to be quick.”

That’s why Steele called Berger up when he was making Proximity. It was a fantastic film. Released in 2017, it paired four legends of surfing with four rising stars as they searched the globe for new waves and new experiences.

Hired on as the Director of Photography, Berger pointed his camera at Rob Machado and Craig Anderson — and although both Machado and Anderson’s surfing speaks for itself, Berger made it come to life on film.
