The Inertia

Mercedes-Benz has a pinky toe in the surfing pool. Well, maybe more than a pinkie, but not quite a big toe. Whatever the digit, Mercedes-Benz, for some unknown reason, has been dipping some part of their foot into surfing–and more specifically Nazaré–for a few years now. Remember when they made those boards for Garrett McNamara and Andrew Cotton?

This slick little thing looks like it came straight out of RoboCop.

Well, they’re back at it again with a very dramatic commercial featuring Sebastian Steudtner. You know him, of course: he’s the guy that’s always on the biggest, baddest waves he can find. For the last little while, most of those have been at Nazaré. Alex Laurel, the supremely talented filmmaker, along with co-directors Michel and Nico followed him around for an entire year. He captured Steudtner’s training regime and a few hectic sessions at some of the biggest conditions Portugal’s most famous wave has ever served up. And, of course, they did it all from the luxurious comfort of a Mercedez-Benz… because nothing says surfing like a luxury car.
